Some of Britain's leading pub and restaurant operators have reported tough trading in February, with like-for-like sales down by 3.7% on average during the month, compared with the same period last year. The drop comes after a 2.1% fall in January, according to the Coffer Peach Business Tracker.

Pub and restaurant group Mitchells & Butlers has agreed a three-year deal with O2 to provide free Wi-Fi in its 1,600 sites across the UK. The deal will see O2 Wi-Fi hotspots introduced to Mitchells & Butlers' UK restaurants and pubs across all brands, which include Harvester, Toby Carvery, Vintage Inns, Nicholson's, Browns, All Bar One and O'Neill's.

The head chef of a Northamptonshire pub and restaurant believes it has become one of the first businesses anywhere in the country to offer a live webcam feed to the kitchen. Russell Clamp, who oversees the kitchen at the Overstone Arms in Pytchley near Kettering, installed the a camera overlooking the pass and the stove in November last year.

The amount of alcohol each person in the UK consumes per head has now fallen 13% since 2004, following a 2.2% drop per head in 2011. That's according to figures from the Office of National Statistics, which the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) is using to repeat its call for a freeze in beer tax.

London-based pub company and brewer Fuller, Smith & Turner has completed its purchase of 15 pubs from Enterprise Inns, announced last month. In addition to the agreed purchase of 15 pubs, Fuller's will also purchase one additional pub, bringing the total number of pubs purchased to 16.

Tim Martin, chairman of the pub chain JD Wetherspoon has repeated his concerns about high taxes, as he hailed a "reasonable" performance in the 26 weeks to 22 January 2012. The company saw revenue climb 8.4% to £569.4m for the period, while pre-tax profit rose 11.1% to £35.8m.
