Edinburgh chef Neil Forbes has been named Scottish Chef of the Year in the Scottish Restaurant Awards. The former Michelin-starred chef, who was at the helm of the Atrium and Blue restaurants until they closed last month, won the award at a ceremony held at the Glasgow Science Centre earlier this week.

The Academy of Food & Wine Service (AFWS) has announced the seven finalists for its annual UK Restaurant Manager of the Year competition. "We had such a high standard of entries this year that we have put a total of seven candidates through rather than six," said Sophie Roberts-Brown.

The search is on to find the National Chef of the Year 2011 and a successor to 2010 winner Hrishikesh Desai. The prestigious competition, run by the Craft Guild of Chefs, will take place at the Restaurant Show in Earls Court 2, London, on Tuesday 11 October.

Staff at the four-star, 230-bedroom Cavendish, London, are celebrating being the only hotel to be included in the Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For 2011 list. Owned by Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, the hotel was placed 35th on the list, compared with 99th last year.

Future Inns has announced that 16-year-old Jacob Brown is the winner of its first Future Hotel Apprentice competition. Brown, from Bristol, will now undertake a month-long management apprenticeship at the hotel chain. "This is a great opportunity for me to learn about the hospitality industry," Brown said.

The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) has voted McMullen's Country Bitter the best pint of real ale in East Anglia. The independent Hertfordshire brewer will now take its place in Camra's national finals to be held at the Great British Beer Festival at London's Earl's Court on 2-6 August.

The line-up for the regional finals for this year's Roux Scholarship has been announced. There will be a total of 18 young chefs competing for a place in the finals, 14 of whom are entering the competition for the first time. The two regional finals will take place on 10 March.

The Academy of Culinary Arts has named the candidates for this year's Annual Awards of Excellence final. Fifty-one young chefs, pastry chefs and waiters (aged between 20 and 26) have been selected for the competition, which will take place in London and Scotland in April.

School caterer Alliance in Partnership (AiP) has recognised its outstanding staff at its annual achievement awards. The caterer's school clients put forward nominees from their AiP staff and this year saw more than 50 individuals considered for an award.

The newly opened Citizen M in Glasgow carried off one of the prizes in the 2011 HRS Hotel Excellence Awards, announced yesterday at the Millbank Tower in London. The 198-bedroom hotel, which began welcoming guests only last summer, won the Robert Ragge Award for Innovation.

Hotels which have introduced innovative green marketing initiatives are invited to enter a new category in the Considerate Hotel of the Year Awards 2010/11. The Best Green Marketing Initiative is to be added to the six other categories in the annual awards, which is open to all UK hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, and pubs/inns/restaurants with rooms.
