The deadline to get nominations in for the Craft Guild of Chefs Awards 2012 has been extended to 23 March. Designed to recognise and reward the top talent working in kitchens across the industry, the 15 categories, plus a special award for an overall industry high-flyer, will be announced at a ceremony at Wembley Stadium on 13 June.

Tight consumer spending has caused on-trade sales of wine to drop 6% for the year to 24 December, with spirits down 2%, according to the latest market report by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA). The off-trade also suffered, with wine sales down 2% in the year to 4 February, while shop sales of spirits were down 1%.

Oxfordshire-based pub company Brakspear has hailed its Tax Free Beer Day as a "huge success" for the 10 Henley pubs participating in it. The move, designed to highlight punitive beer taxation, saw the pubs sell Brakspear Bitter, Oxford Gold, Kronenbourg, Foster's and Heineken at a discount of £1.30 - the amount of tax on a pint sold for £3.10.

Manchester-based pub group Clover Taverns has entered administration. The company has 10 pubs across the country, from Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, up to Preston in Lancashire. David Cameron is set to push ahead with plans to introduce minimum alcohol pricing. According to reports, the prime minister will face down a cabinet backlash and approve a minimum price of 40p per unit.
