Klaus Kabelitz is leaving London's Berkeley hotel, where he has been general manager for nine years. Kabelitz said that it had been "an honour and a privilege" to look after the hotel and assured guests that the staff at the property would continue to look after them "in the exquisite and innovative way that has become a hallmark for the Berkeley".

High-end caterer Searcys has appointed Christian Rose as managing director of retail as the company looks to grow this arm of the business. Rose will be responsible for driving forward a number of new bar and brasserie style concepts that are currently in development, as well as expanding the existing Champagne bar offer.

Edinburgh's Sheraton Grand Hotel is launching a new restaurant this month, with the opening of One Square. Opening on 19 April, the 100-seat restaurant will be led by executive chef Malcolm Webster, who previously worked at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in London, offering a modern British take on the classic grand café.

Spanish hotel company the Barceló Group has agreed to pay a penalty fee of £20.25m after pulling out of an agreement early to operate 20 hotels in the UK. At the end of last year Barceló threatened to quit the UK if its request to Puma Hotels, the owner of the four-star properties, for a reduction in the rent it paid for the hotels was not met.

Celebrity chef Mark Hix is to open a 150-seat restaurant in the Tramshed building in Shoreditch, east London, next month. The former Chef of the Year Catey winner, who already operates six venues in the capital, as well as a restaurant in Lyme Regis in Dorset, will open Tramshed together with business partner Ratnesh Bagdai in May.

Aspire Special Events, part of the Silverstone-based Aspire Group, has scooped a three-year deal with the Country Land & Business Association (CLA) Annual Game Fair. Worth £1.5m in turnover, the contract will see Aspire provide catering and hospitality services at the event.

Out-of-hour deliveries are to be encouraged during the Olympic and Paralympic Games to help reduce the expected traffic congestion. Transport for London (TfL), London councils and the capital's businesses have reached agreement to be sympathetic to companies that need to make or receive night-time deliveries.

The 62-bedroom Ellenborough Park hotel, which opened in Cheltenham a year ago, has just been awarded five stars by the AA. Situated in a 16th-century manor house, overlooking Cheltenham racecourse, the hotel is operated by the Mantis Group.

The go-ahead has been given for the conversion of the former Port of London Authority headquarters, next to the Tower of London, into a luxury hotel. Work is now expected to start later this year on the development of the Grade II-listed building at 10 Trinity Square into a 120-bedroom hotel with 41 serviced apartments.

Caterers are being invited to tender for a multimillion-pound contract with national retirement housing provider Hanover. The five-year deal to cater for its 59 extra care housing estates will have the option to be extended twice for 12 months, taking it to a total of seven years.

Sandwich chain Pret A Manger is to create 550 UK jobs as part of ongoing expansion plans after a year of record sales and store openings. The 286-strong chain, which launched in London in 1986, plans to open 44 stores in 2012, of which 20 will be overseas, including its first in Boston in the USA.

Mexican dining chain Barburrito plans to triple its number of restaurants and target the London market, after it managed to attract £3.25m in new investment. The North-west business, founded in 2005 by Manchester-based entrepreneurs, Morgan Davies and Paul Kilpatrick, will receive the equity investment from private investor, Business Growth Fund (BGF).

Whitbread has made Christopher Rogers the new managing director of Costa Coffee, following the departure of John Derkach, who will become chief executive of restaurant group Tragus. Rogers is currently group finance director at Whitbread, and will now be tasked with expanding the Costa business.

Adam Smith, premier sous chef at the Ritz in London, has been named the 2012 Roux Scholar. Smith, who had entered the prestigious competition for the first time this year, won the title following a fierce cook-off in the kitchens of London's Westminster Kingsway College yesterday (2 April).

Hotel Solutions London, which went into administration last week, has been sold to Housekeeping Solutions, run by a director of the original company. Based in Wembley, Middlesex, the hotel servicing, housekeeping and catering business held contracts with hotels and shops.

Norman Springford, chairman of Apex Hotels, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland. The award was unanimously awarded to Springford, whose Edinburgh-based company owns and operates eight hotels in Edinburgh, Dundee and London.
