A "poisoned" relationship between Compass Group's healthcare business Medirest and Mid Essex Hospital Services ended up in court after the NHS Trust withheld payment of more than £700,000. The trust had tried to deduct more than £80,000 from its catering bill because of a day-old chocolate mousse.

French restaurant and pâtisserie operator Aubaine is to open its sixth site in London, with the launch of a new restaurant in Wimbledon Village. The group, which also has two restaurants in Manchester, has taken over the former Common Room site on Wimbledon High Street.

Managed pub and bar operator TCG has opened its sixth site under the Henry's Café Bar brand in Bromley. Henry's Bromley opens on the site of a former Ivory Lounge, after TCG spotted what it thinks is a gap in the market for a "more ambitious" eating out offer.

Mitchells & Butlers and Aramark were the big winners at last week's Menu Innovation and Development Awards (MIDAS), picking up three and two awards respectively. The MIDAS awards, held at the Cumberland hotel, London, were founded in 2009 by the Menu Innovation Network.

The School Food Trust (SFT) has launched a new 'train the trainer' scheme aimed at helping school cooks share their skills with their team. The charity has introduced the initiative in response to the demand for school cooks to deliver training on kitchen and cooking skills to less experienced staff.
