One of London's original Victorian boutique hotels is set to reopen in July following a multimillion-pound refurbishment. The 11-bedroom Ampersand hotel will open with interior designs by Dexter Moren Associates inspired by the surrounding culture of South Kensington.

Former pubs minister John Healey has urged the chancellor to "back British beer". Healey has written to George Osborne, telling him: "Having been minister for HM Customs & Excise and responsible for excise duties for the five years I spent in the Treasury, I am concerned that we are now overlooking and undervaluing a great British asset."

Mixology skills will again be put to the test in the 2012 Galvin Cup competition, which is now opened for entries. The founders of the competition, Michelin-starred chef Chris Galvin and Fred Sirieix, general manager at Galvin at Windows, decided it was time for bar staff to receive the same recognition as chefs for their hard work and creativity.

The Association of Independent Music (AIM) is relocating its awards ceremony to a larger venue following the success of the inaugural event last year. With 650 guests, the event is to double in size in response to the overwhelming interest in 2011's event held at Floridita in Wardour Street.

The case of a former waiter at London restaurant Bloom's who died of an asbestos-related disease has been settled for £70,790 in the week it was due to go to trial. Miltiades Charalambous, known as Milton, died aged 70 of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, on 8 March 2010.

Event caterer Jackson Gilmour has won a contract to cater for the great and the good of Denmark at the Natural History Museum during the 2012 Olympics. The one-off event, expected to be worth in the region of £100,000, will take place in early August.

British restaurant group Canteen is to launch its fifth site in London, with the opening of an outlet in Covent Garden in the spring. The group has taken over a site on the ground floor of the Lyceum theatre, which will open in May. It follows Canteen's six-month pop-up restaurant at Covent Garden Market, which launched last September.

Plans to introduce minimum alcohol pricing have been announced by the coalition today, in a bid to tackle the country's problem with binge-drinking. Proposals were revealed in the Government's Alcohol Strategy: Choice, Challenge and Responsibility, after Prime Minister David Cameron said it was no longer acceptable that "beer is cheaper than water".

Clarenco has purchased two sea forts in the Solent to add to the existing Spitbank Fort which reopens this month as a 16-bedroom exclusive-use venue after a £3m restoration. The acquisition of No Man's Land Fort and Horse Sand Fort will together form Solent Forts, a new arm of Clarenco.

Italian pizza pasta restaurant chain Del Arte is seeking British franchise partners as it plans to enter the UK market. Owned by Le Duff Group, the company, which runs 107 restaurants in France as well as two in Ireland, hopes to open 10 restaurants in the UK in the next seven years.

Michelin-starred Quilon restaurant in London's Westminster has opened its new Q Bar, completing the restaurant's first redesign in 12 years. The restaurant will also be introducing brand new wine and beer lists selected by executive chef Sriram Aylur and master of wine Peter McCombie.

Renowned chocolatier William Curley has been awarded the Guinness World Record for the most expensive chocolate egg sold at an auction after his creation went under the hammer for £7,000. Curley's 50kg egg was sold off as part of 30 golden eggs in the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt auction.

Gordon Ramsay is suing his former associate at Montreal's Laurier BBQ restaurant for more than £1m after he terminated the celebrity chef's association with the eatery. Ramsay has filed a lawsuit against Danny Lavy, suing for Cdn$2.25m (£1.4m) in lost licensing fees due to alleged breach of contract.

Jamie Oliver is to open a branch of his new restaurant concept, Union Jacks, at the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent in the summer. The new site will be the second restaurant opening for the celebrity chef at Bluewater, where he already operates a Jamie's Italian. It will be located on the lower Thames Walk at the entrance to the recently opened Plaza.
