AFWS names finalists for 2012 Moët UK Sommelier of the Year

Master of Wine John Avery dies

John AveryJohn Avery MW, a leading light in the drinks trade, has died aged 70. He passed away in hospital on 23 March following a heart attack in his sleep. The chairman of wine merchant Averys of Bristol, now part of Direct Wines, was regarded by many as a pioneer of the UK trade because of his keen interest in New World wines.

The pair, who launched sister restaurant 28°-50° in the City of London in 2010, have taken on a new site in Marylebone.

Vinoteca to open third site in Soho

Vinoteca SohoThe owners of London wine bar and shop Vinoteca are set to launch a third site this spring, with the opening of a new venue in Soho. Brett Woonton, Charlie Young and Elena Ares, who already operate Vinoteca in Farringdon and Marylebone, will open a wine bar, dining room and wine shop on Beak Street in mid-April.

On-trade wine and spirits sales hit by tight consumer spending

Wine waiterTight consumer spending has caused on-trade sales of wine to drop 6% for the year to 24 December, with spirits down 2%, according to the latest market report by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA). The off-trade also suffered, with wine sales down 2% in the year to 4 February, while shop sales of spirits were down 1%.
