Fairlie celebrates new stars from MichelinAndrew Fairlie at Gleneagles is promoted to two-star status The week in brief: 26 January 2006 Clapham House buys new site Clapham House has bought a site in Covent Garden that will become its seventh Real Greek Souvlaki Bar and Restaurant. The group, which also owns the Bombay Bicycle Club and Gourmet Burger Kitchen brands, has acquired the ground floor and basement of the listed Kembles Head pub on Long Acre with a 25-year lease. The 50- to 60-seat restaurant will open just before Easter. The group will open new Gourmet Burger Kitchens in Kingston, Surrey, in May and in Brighton in June. Barracuda nets £100m Pub company Barracuda has smashed through the £100m turnover barrier for the first time in its six-year history. The company saw turnover increase in the year ended 1 October by 15% to £108.8m (from £94.4m in 2004). Food sales at the group increased 30% over the year to £14m, compared with £10.8m a year ago. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation were 16% higher at £29.3m (£25.3m in 2004). Deadline for 2006 Acorn entries draws nearCaterer and Hotelkeeper is looking for 30 outstanding individuals under the age of 30 to be this year's Acorn Award winners, but time is running out. Northern awards inauguratedCaterer has joined forces with the organiser of the Northern Restaurant and Bar Show to launch the first awards dedicated to the hospitality industry in the North of England. The week in brief Welsh chefs bag medals A team of top Welsh chefs have won gold and silver medals at the World Culinary Masters competition in Switzerland. The team finished sixth overall, pushing them up to seventh in the world rankings. Wales First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: "It's wonderful to see Welsh chefs doing so much to promote their country abroad." The team gained a gold medal for their "cold buffet table" and a silver medal for their work in the "hot kitchen". Ford joins academy Jeremy Ford, executive chef for hospitality at Restaurant Associates, has been made a member of the Academy of Culinary Arts. The chef at Compass Group's fine-dining division is only the fourth contract caterer to join the 270-strong training and support organisation.
