Welsh chefs bag medals A team of top Welsh chefs have won gold and silver medals at the World Culinary Masters competition in Switzerland. The team finished sixth overall, pushing them up to seventh in the world rankings. Wales First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: "It's wonderful to see Welsh chefs doing so much to promote their country abroad." The team gained a gold medal for their "cold buffet table" and a silver medal for their work in the "hot kitchen". Ford joins academy Jeremy Ford, executive chef for hospitality at Restaurant Associates, has been made a member of the Academy of Culinary Arts. The chef at Compass Group's fine-dining division is only the fourth contract caterer to join the 270-strong training and support organisation. The Education and Training Award, now in its fourth year, recognises individuals who have demonstrated an innovative approach to training and continuous learning. Last year Cyrus Todiwala, proprietor and executive chef of the Café Spice Namaste restaurant group, was chosen for his immense contribution to training in the restaurant industry. In 1999 he and two other entrepreneurs lobbied the Government for the money required to launch the Asian & Oriental School of Catering in London's Hoxton, providing the often-marginalised Asian restaurant business a lifeline of young, well-trained talent. Todiwala is also a supporter of Springboard UK (he won the Springboard Special Award towards the end of last year) and regularly gives talks and cookery demonstrations in addition to his day job. Last year's winner, Tim Bacon, the man behind the successful Living Ventures bar business, once dreamed of finding fame in his native Australia as an actor. Luckily for us he put that particular dream on hold and moved to the UK, where he pursued another dream, this time making his mark in the bar industry, after time spent at TGI Friday's. Back in 1996, Bacon launched Life Restaurants with business partner Jeremy Roberts. Selling the business to Marstons and Whitbread, the pair formed Living Ventures in October 1999 and opened the first Living Room bar in Manchester in December of that year.
