The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is to lose its responsibility for nutrition policy and country of origin labelling but keep its food safety remit, as the Government pares down the quango. The FSA will hand over nutrition policy to the Department of Health.

Confusion surrounds the future of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) after reports that the Government was preparing to scrap the health body, with all "arms length bodies" under review as part of its cost cutting. The FSA, which employs 2,000 staff and has an annual budget of £135m, is the non-ministerial body for the protection of the public's health and consumer interests in relation to food.

Police have arrested two men on suspicion of arson after a fire broke out at a hotel in Cumbria.
Fire crews rescued an 82-year-old woman from the blaze at the Cumberland hotel, in Workington, after they were called to the scene at just after 21:15 on Friday evening.
Local newspaper the Times & Star reported that two fires had been started on either side of a fire break on the first floor.
