Compass Group has announced the launch of Rapport, a new specialist provider of front- and back-of-house guest services. The world's largest contract caterer said its new business division was developed in recognition of the growing demand for a tailored, premium service of this nature.

Five Croydon schools have been selected to take part in a 12-week school food collections waste pilot scheme, with a view to possible expansion across the borough. Recycling in Croydon was stepped up last year when a domestic food-waste collection service was introduced.

Education caterer Innovate Services' recent research into packed lunches found that just 7% complied with the food-based standards for school dinners. The caterer's Lunch Box Amnesty study group also found that just under a quarter (24%) of lunch boxes analysed achieved the food-based standard.

Schools are being invited to compete for the opportunity to prepare a Diamond Jubilee menu for the Queen at Buckingham Palace. To celebrate The Queen's 60 years on the throne, British Food Fortnight is running a competition for schools in which students will create a menu.

Education caterer Alliance in Partnership (AiP) has been awarded a new five-year contract with a Worcestershire school. AiP will deliver school meals to 398 pupils at Birchensale Middle School in Batchley in a deal worth around £340,000.

Jan Matthews, head of catering for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), will take to the podium for the Arena Savoy Lecture, it has been announced. The Arena Savoy Lecture is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 20 March.

Keith Prowse, Compass Group's specialist hospitality division, has been awarded a lucrative five-year contract to deliver overseas tours and UK hospitality programmes at the Championships, Wimbledon. The new appointment, which starts in 2013, was awarded by the All England Club.

Harrogate International Centre was the big winner at the Kudos "K" Awards, after two of its staff members picked up the employee and general manager of the year titles at the company's annual awards event, held last week. Kudos, the food and venue arm of the Crown Group, named Leah White its employee of the year.

The Crown Group's Kudos Cafés business has won a £12m contract with Warwick District Council to deliver food and venue management services at four venues in Royal Leamington Spa. The six-year deal sees Kudos provide a new food offer at the Restaurant in the Park, renamed Jephson's Brasserie, and the Aviary Cafe, both located in Jephson Gardens.

BaxterStorey has scooped a sweet deal to provide staff dining at gum and jellies manufacturer Haribo. Believed to be worth in excess of £100,000, the two-year contract will see BaxterStorey cater for 550 Haribo employees at its UK head office in Pontefract, West Yorkshire.

Police have begun an investigation into allegations that food served by Eurest at a London crown court were spiked with urine. The advocates' lounge in Snaresbrook Crown Court was closed after police were contacted when judges and barristers complained the food smelled "a bit off".

Consumers are certainly tightening their belts, and may even have resolved to drink less in 2012, but one luxury it seems we can no longer contemplate cutting back on is coffee. Since 2005, the branded coffee chain market has doubled and is now estimated to be worth £2.1b according to Allegra Strategies.
