Operators are to be pitted against each other in a mandatory scheme to rank and reward the best energy efficiency performers. All businesses that had at least one half-hourly electricity meter during 2008 must register for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme by the end of September.

The UK’s first fully vegetarian and low-carbon restaurant chain is set to launch in London’s West End this summer. Otarian, which is opening two restaurants in New York City this month, will launch two sites in the capital on Shaftesbury Avenue and Wardour Street in June.

Guests using the gym at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers will not only get fit, but they will also soon start producing electricity for the hotel. The 366-bedroom Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers, which describes itself as one of the world’s greenest hotels, is to install electricity producing bicycles on 19 April in an effort to become more energy efficient.

France has agreed to back a ban on the global trade of bluefin tuna to protect the endangered species from overfishing. The country said it wants a ban to allow scientists time to study the data on tuna stocks. However, it demanded an 18-month delay to the implementation of the ban.
