More than 100 firefighters tackled a blaze at the Falmouth Beach hotel in Cornwall on Monday. The fire was reported at the 120-bedroom Best Western property at Gyllyngvase beach seafront at 12.09pm on 30 April.

A new Tiki-inspired bar has opened in Chelsea, with the launch of Kona Kai. Named after the Hawaiian term for "Lady of the Sea", the 350-cover Kona Kai features an oasis-style interior, decked out in bamboo and palm trees, with the main bar area featuring a wooden carved canoe suspended from the ceiling.

Hertfordshire-based hotels group Beales Hotels has purchased the freehold of West Lodge Park Hotel in Cockfosters after holding the property's lease for more than 65 years. The family-run business, which also includes the four-star Beales Hotel in Hatfield, has run the 59-bedroom hotel since 1945.

Mitchells and Butlers, one of the UK's biggest pub and restaurant groups, has revealed that it is to join the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR). Bob Ivell, executive chairman of the firm, made the announcement at the ALMR's 20th anniversary conference yesterday (Thursday).

Some of Britain's top chefs are to man a four-month pop-up restaurant at London's Southbank Centre this summer. Two-Michelin-starred chefs Sat Bains, Claude Bosi and Daniel Clifford will be joined by Michelin-starred chefs Jonray and Peter Sanchez, and Tom Kitchin at the Cube by Electrolux, which will run from the end of May to September.
