Belfast caterer Mount Charles Group has opened its first contract outside of Northern Ireland, with a multimillion-pound deal at Exeter Airport. The company will invest £250,000 in the new venture, which sees Mount Charles named the exclusive food and drink provider at the site.

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon remains "cautious" as it readies itself for the impact of a £50m tax bill, the company said today. Like-for-like sales in the year to date (39 weeks to 22 April) were up 2%, but the pubco reiterated its concerns about high taxes in a Q3 trading update.

A new café has opened at Pearce's Farm Shop near Puckeridge in Hertfordshire, as the business bids to capitalise on the burgeoning eating out market. The site sits 90 inside and a further 90 outside on the terrace and is staffed by eight full-time workers including chefs Dan Brinklow and Andrew Flatts, a pastry chef and a sous chef.

Gavin Williams, the chief executive of the West Cornwall Pasty Company, has written a letter to Chancellor George Osborne warning that proposals to close a loophole on VAT exemptions for hot take-away food - the so-called pasty tax - could damage the Cornish economy.

Independent brewer Bath Ales has launched its latest seasonal brew, called Summer's Hare. The brewer said the beer is light, hoppy and "well balanced with some fruit and malt". It has been brewed using pale Maris Otter floor-malted barley and a mix of Bramling Cross and Chinook hops.

Alan Murchison's 10 in 8 Fine Dining Group has merged with Nina and Gerard Basset's Hotel TerraVina in the New Forest. The merger sees Nina Basset take on the role of group managing director and will see the development of the TerraVina brand as well as the creation of a cookery and wine school.

Mitie has signed a record £775m bundled services contract with Lloyds Banking Group. The five-year deal, with a possible one-year extension period, is worth around £155m a year and is reckoned to be one of the UK's biggest private client facilities management deals.

The British Hospitality Association is set to showcase the breadth and depth of the UK's hospitality and tourism industry by bringing together a host of industry leaders and key politicians at its first-ever Hospitality and Tourism Summit on 1 June. Boutique hotel Strattons in Swaffham, Norfolk, has further bolstered its green credentials with an innovative new approach to removing spent coffee grounds from its waste stream. By naturally drying the grounds and re-bagging it in its original packaging, it can be handed out to guests as a horticultural compost.

Devon & Cornwall police have indicated that three guests are still unaccounted for, following the fire that ravaged the Falmouth Beach Hotel yesterday. It was reported that hotel staff and around 30 guests, including Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, were evacuated from the Best Western hotel.

City caterer Lusso has launched "ugly fish Friday" in a stand against the North Sea fishing quota system that sees half of all fish caught there thrown back, dead. Lusso, part of CH&Co, will serve a variety of "ugly fish" at its sites every Friday that are all species on the Marine Stewardship Council's approved list.

Ampersand has added the Museum of London and the Cutty Sark to its growing list of venues in the capital at which it has approved caterer status, the company has announced. The caterer, part of CH&Co, was also recently named as one of 11 caterers to make it on to the approved list for the Science Museum for 2012-2014.
