What's New? - Alcoholic & Soft Drinks

Thursday 31 July 2003 15:04

Fizz injection with milk
Britvic Soft Drinks is shaking up the kids' soft drinks market with Freekee Soda. This mixes the fizz with the smooth to create a new taste sensation described as "smizziness".

This is created by blending milk with real fruit juices - with a final injection of fizz.

The drink is aimed at kids aged 10 to 13 years old looking for something new, exciting and different.

It is a blend of four per cent skimmed milk with seven per cent real fruit juice. It has no added sugar and each bottle contains a sixth of the recommended daily allowance of calcium.

Available in two flavours - Strange Strawberry and Odd Orange in 330ml portable embossed bottles.

The brand has an ambient shelf life of six months, but Britvic recommends it should be sold from the chiller, positioned alongside carbonates.

It's clear
Ty Nant's clear PET bottle marks a complete move away from its usual blue glass packaging. The asymmetrical bottle has been specifically designed to evoke the fluidity of water.

Feedback to the new style of bottle has been extremely positive, with the company's sales doubling year on year.

The new PET bottle is available in 500ml, one litre and 1.5 litre sizes.

Sail of the century
Wines 4 Travel, a division of H&A Wines and Spirit Group is supplying a range of quarter bottles of wine to passengers on board NorseMerchant ferries.

The company is supplying Terramater Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, McPherson's Shiraz and Chardonnay and a Liebfraumilch in 18.75cl bottles for the company's entire fleet of ships.

The advantages of quarter bottles of wine, according to the company, is they are easy to serve and store, as well as reducing wastage.

A patriotic pint
Scottish customers can now enjoy the perfect patriotic pint thanks to a unique "Scottish Thistle" decorated glass.  Developed by Hertfordshire based glassware decorator Charles Glassware in conjunction with King UK, the stylish Headkeeper Tulip pint glasses provide an impactful and cost-effective alternative to the traditional pint pot.

In addition to its aesthetic qualities, the glass's unique raised "Scottish Thistle" Headkeeper design releases carbon dioxide through its nucleation process, ensuring that customers drinking lager, cider or keg beers retain a better head on every pint.

International favourite draughted into UK
Amstel is Europe's second most popular beer (after Heineken) and very much a global brand. For example, it is the brand leader in Greece, while Amstel Light is the number one imported light beer in the USA.  Almost two billion pints of Amstel were enjoyed by drinkers in 2001 in over 100 countries around the world.

The new draught Amstel is a fresh tasting, smooth and firm-bodied lager. It has a slightly malty palate and a light hop character with a rich golden colour and an ABV of 4.1%.

Simon Green, senior brand manager for Amstel in the UK, says: "It will also give the on-trade an alternative between their premium and standard lager offerings and the opportunity to benefit from higher margins than the standard range delivers."

Draught Amstel is initially being launched in London and Manchester, with a nationwide roll-out to follow.

Amstel will be supported by below-the-line activity on selected target outlets, including POS material and back-bar merchandising, geared to supporting its presence in outlets.

In the black
New is Black Isle Organic Stout, made at the Black Isle Brewery in the Highlands of Scotland.

This "live" stout is brewed with dark roasted malts. The result is a rich and mellow black beer. It is suitable to serve with mature cheddar, a slice of fruitcake or oysters and crab.

Cranberry Honey Dew Ale, made at Fuller's Griffin Brewery in London, is another new product, while two new ciders include an Organic Vintage Cider produced by Westons.

Go organic
The Organic Spirits Company has introduced what is thought to be the world's first organic spiced rum.

Organic ingredients include mead, molasses, vanilla, ginger and chilli. It can be served over ice or with lemonade, cola or other mixers.

Papagayo Organic Spiced Rum carries a 35% alcohol by volume strength and is packaged in 700ml bottles.
