Cold is cool so think twice about icemakers time for the new ice age

Thursday 21 August 2003 18:20

Right proper freeze-up
To maximise output, new user-friendly electro-mechanical controls have been developed for latest Foster icemakers, making it possible to adjust settings on site to suit ambient air and water conditions. A choice of integral and modular models is available across six different capacities from 20-300kg/day.

A new flush system keeps ice free from impurities and limescale. Low water usage is claimed with cubers needing as little as five litres of water to produce one kg of ice. The high output modular models have dedicated storage bins to meet the peak demand requirements of larger businesses.

Chips off the block
To aid rapid cooling of meat products, fresh produce, convenience meals, bakery and other items, a range of Ziegra chip ice makers has been added to the growing choice of rentable temperature-controlled products available from Dawsonrentals. The machines, in five models from 350kg/day upwards, can be rented on weekly, monthly or annual terms, offering the flexibility to upgrade at short notice if required. Only connections required are electricity and water.

The benefit of chip ice is that it remains loose and workable for prolonged periods. Cost of producing ice can work out at under £10 per tonne, including the rental charge. Rental packages include full maintenance and 24 hour back-up.

Longer life
Masterfrost automatic icemakers now available through Valera use a fine spray system to produce hard clear ice but differ from other icemakers with a patented system of waste heat recovery to harvest the ice. This is claimed to gain longer compressor life, lower running costs (saving up to 20 per cent electricity) and the ability to operate in ambient temperatures up to 40°C.

The range covers seven models with outputs from 25 to 280 kg/hr price and storage capacity from 8 to 140 kg. Prices range from £599 to £2499.

Valera also sells Whirlpool ice-makers, which offer a compact footprint in 24 and 40kg/day versions and the facility to adjust ice thickness between 10 and 12 mm. Prices: £665 and £832.  The Porkka KL range, covering nine models from 19 to 260kg/day output, is also available, with prices from £599 to £2,705. All machines use a spray type production system. Modular models (KL171 and KL301) operate in conjunction with a storage bin with more than one unit stackable if output needs to be expanded.

Push button variety
A new push-button variant of the Scotsman TC180 ice and water dispenser has been introduced with a similar "Chrysler building" casing but with push-button rather than hands-free operation to suit self-service applications such as in-store restaurants, staff canteens and motorway services.

One button enables users to dispense ice in the form of cubelets while the other dispenses chilled water. On self-service counters, the unit's top-mounted airflow ventilation system enables machines to be sited flush against banks of drinks machines or food displays if necessary.
