Restaurateurs are being asked to sign an honesty pledge confirming that the pork they buy complies with production standards followed by British farmers.
The National Pig Association (NPA) wants restaurateurs to back the production standards set by Britain's pig farmers and to tell customers where the pork they sell comes from and to what standards it was reared.
The association said it would also target suppliers in a bid to get them to clearly label the country of origin of fresh pork, bacon, ham and sausages on their price lists.
The move follows the launch of the NPA's new best-practice guidelines, drawn up following the recent publication of a report by the British Pig Executive. That report showed that about 70% of imported pork and processed pork products were produced to lower standards than those acceptable in Britain.
