People 1st proposes merger with GoSkills

People 1st, the Sector Skills Council for the hospitality industry, has proposed a merger with GoSkills, which looks after training in the passenger transport sector.

People 1st said the idea to pool its resources with GoSkills had been prompted by reductions in Government funding.

If the merger went ahead, the new combined body would serve hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism.

Both organisations said they believed there was "a natural fit" between passenger transport and travel and tourism, and that the merger would strengthen the representation of the sectors to government.

Brian Wisdom, chief executive of People 1st, said: "A merger will enrich the offerings across both of our sectors, allowing for a more integrated approach to skills development in areas of passenger transport and travel and tourism, closely aligned to hospitality and leisure. These are areas where there is significant employer overlap and evident synergy between our organisations, particularly the need for customer service and leadership and management skills."
