Cocktail guru Dan Cave, of the Aquasia bar at the Conrad London hotel, is only too aware of how high-maintenance women can put a strain on your wallet. That's why he's come up with a cocktail that's bound to impress the classy lady who loves to live large. The Bling String Thing, a blend of Dom Prignon '96, fresh white peaches and crme de pche, comes complete with crystal-encrusted G-string courtesy of lingerie maker Janet Reger. That'll put a smile on her face.
Are we ready for the Big Mac diet?
An American woman claims to have lost 33lb by eating nothing but McDonald's for 90 days. Merab Morgan, of Henderson, North Carolina, began her diet because she found the film Super Size Me insulting. In the documentary, the film maker put on 25lb after eating exclusively at McDonald's for just one month. But Morgan, 35, memorised the calories in almost every menu item and limits herself to 1,400 calories a day, reports the Detroit Free Press. "It's kind of like the poor man's diet," said Morgan, who has tried Weight Watchers and Atkins but failed because of the time and money those plans required. Her goal is to lose 40-60lb. By day 67 she had lost 33. Nothing at McDonald's is off limits, although she's eaten French fries only twice - you're better off eating two cheeseburgers, she says. Nutritionist Barry Popkin said Morgan would need more vitamins, minerals and fibre, but admitted: "She's created, for her lifestyle, a very smart diet."
If the hotel can't go to the Beach...
The Great Eastern hotel on Liverpool Street in the City of London is transforming its atrium into a beach for the second year running. From this Saturday (30 July) bar staff will be dressed for the beach and customers coming straight from work are encouraged to roll up their trousers, kick off their shoes and wiggle their toes in five tonnes of sand spread across the atrium floor. Nightly events will include wine tastings, cocktail parties and DJ sessions from Concrete Music, Warp Records and 679 Recordings.
