The UEFA Euro 2008 football championships in June kicked Vienna towards the top of the profitability table of the 10 European cities listed in the monthly Europe HotStats survey.
The Austrian capital boosted income before fixed charges per available room (IBFCpar) by 80.5% to €128.82, second only to Paris’ €131.93.
“Vienna’s chain hoteliers played a winning tactical game in June, eschewing volume for revenue growth,” commented Joanathan Langston, managing director at TRI.
As a result, Viennese hotels boosted average room rate by 61.4% to a table-topping €270.16 but saw occupancy fall by 9.5 percenrage points to 72.4%, the lowest in the survey.
Vienna was one of just four cities in the survey to increase profitability year-on-year during June, alongside London, Munich, and Berlin.
Hamburg fell to the bottom of the profitability league thanks to a combination of recent openings and widespread discounting.
The figures are compiled each month by Tri Hospitality Consulting.
