London On Tap, the campaign promoting the capital's tap water, has unveiled the winning design for a carafe that is to be rolled out across London’s bars, hotels and restaurants next year.

The campaign, which was launched by Thames Water and the Mayor of London earlier this year, aims to push the use of tap water and to highlight the impact of bottled water on climate change and the environment.

The winning entry, ‘Tap Top’ by London-based designer Neil Barron, is a tapered glass carafe featuring four pouring spouts. It was selected from a shortlist of 10 designs which were judged by a panel including chef-restaurateur Aldo Zilli and architect Zaha Hadid.

Tap Top will be manufactured in January and will go on sale to the capital’s hospitality businesses in spring.

Thames Water chief executive David Owens said drinking tap water makes economic and environmental sense.

“London’s tap water is 500 times cheaper than bottled water and generates 300 times less carbon during production than its bottled water alternative,” he said.

“We want to make our tap water accessible to everyone, and we want Londoners to be offered a choice about what they drink when they go out.”

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, added: “At a time when we are all tightening our belts, choosing tap water over bottled water makes more sense than ever, and also helps people cut their carbon footprint.”
