Indian restaurant faces £30,000 fine for illegal workers

Thursday 02 April 2009 11:50

An Indian restaurant in Hampshire has been hit with a £30,000 fine after being caught employing six illegal workers.

Shafi Hussain owner of Balaka in Winchester said that the fine could affect the future of the business and that an appeal was being prepared.

The raid by the UK Border Agency last November discovered the six Bangladeshi nationals working illegally.

Outlining his grounds of appeal Mr Hussain said: “Although the UKBA are right to say their permits have expired they were in the process of getting them renewed.

"Four of the group were temporary staff brought in to cope with a busy Saturday evening. They should have been the responsibility of the agency that supplied us with the staff.”

Expanding on the decision a spokeswoman for the UKBA said that one worker had already been sent back to Bangladesh, another was appealing a deportation order and the other four were on immigration bail.
