Proposal has widespread repercussions

Tuesday 02 May 2006 11:37

We should all remember that the bed tax proposal, although unfairly targeted at the hospitality industry, stands to have very widespread repercussions.

There are many other industries, some comprising small firms such as my own, which depend wholly or in part on business from the hospitality sector. Every time Britain's hospitality industry is harmed, so are we.

There are also hidden, yet very real and important environmental considerations, too. If we believe the Treasury's suggestion that bed tax will be "only 5%", it will add almost £100 to the typical weekly accommodation bill for a family of four.

How many families will therefore be persuaded to spend that extra £100 going overseas instead, thus adding to the increasing pollution problem from aircraft?

This proposal should be abandoned for social, economic and environmental reasons.
