Freedom from flies

Tuesday 13 July 2004 11:30

Come summer, flies tend to be a nuisance for alfresco diners and a health and safety issue in your kitchen. Measures to fight back vary from the expensive and technologically advanced to simple traps such as the Redtop Disposable Flycatcher from South Africa. The Redtop works by luring and trapping flies outdoors where they breed, before they pester your customers. The bait is particularly irresistible to the female, with the result that about 85% of flies caught are egg-laying females. After about eight weeks the trap is emptied and rebaited, or discarded and replaced. The manufacturer claims it catches up to 155 flies a minute, and is suitable for use outside kitchens.

Price: £19 per trap
