A chef who smashed up a restaurant in a fit of anger is to be given a second chance because his cooking skills are so highly rated.

Roy Parr, 50, saw red when he was told that the the Café Bridge in Gateshead where he worked, and had invested some of his own money, was to close down.

Storming round the café with a hammer he smashed all the windows, doing damage estimated in excess of £5,000.

But when he appeared before Gateshead magistrates it was revealed that the new owner of the restaurant wanted him to stay on because of his culinary skills.

Defence lawyer Kate Barnes said: “He has been approached by his former employer who has put him in touch with the new owner."

It was added that he was now receiving assistance to help him control his temper.

Parr was ordered to pay £600 in compensation and given an 18-month supervision order.
