Budget hotel chain boss backs Conservative opposition to Bed Tax

The boss of budget hotel chain Travelodge has cheered the Conservative Party’s attack on proposals to introduce a Bed Tax.

Grant Hearn, chief executive, said the Bed Tax proposed by Sir Michael Lyons as part of a wider local government review would lead to a consumer backlash if introduced.

“It is great to see the opposition party fighting this ridiculous tax,” he said.

Research conducted by Travelodge found 85% of UK consumers already perceive domestic breaks to be too expensive. 

The study of 2,000 UK consumers also found 77% would be more likely to holiday overseas given the extra cost of a bed tax, and 67% would reduce the length of their UK break.
