Megu opened its Hong Kong branch in October 2002

International restaurant brand Megu has shelved plans to open a London outlet, Caterersearch has learnt.

The trendy Japanese company, which has branches in New York and Hong Kong, had planned to launch a restaurant on Bruton Street (near Berkeley Square) in Mayfair.

It had appointed architects Marchini Curran Associates to oversee the design of the 10,000 sq ft site, which was the birthplace of Queen Elizabeth II.

Megu London, which was initially set to open last autumn and then pushed back to spring, was to serve contemporary Japanese cuisine and include features such as a Buddha ice statue carved daily.

However, Megu marketing director Holly Moritz confirmed to Caterersearch that the group has now axed plans to come to the capital.

“We’re no longer opening a site in London.,” she said. “Things just didn’t work out with the location.”

She added that the group’s international expansion is set to go ahead.

Megu currently operates two restaurants in New York and one in Hong Kong and has plans to open in Moscow, Doha, Delhi and Mumbai next year.
