French restaurant Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecote in London’s Marylebone is to launch a sister venue in the City next year.

The restaurant, which opened on Marylebone High Street in 2005, only serves green salad and steak frites at £19, as well as a range of French desserts.

The City branch, which is set to open in January, will be a 170-seat brasserie located on the site of the former Stock Exchange on Old Broad Street.

Michael Elghanayan, founding shareholder of Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecote, told Caterersearch that while the group was slightly nervous about launching a City restaurant in the current climate, it felt confident the concept would work.

“Of course now isn’t an easy time to launch a new restaurant but it has been in the pipeline for two years and we feel that the concept will work really well in the City,” he said.

“If all goes well, we’re hoping to launch a third London site in the Kensington Chelsea area and possibly further outlets in other major UK cities including Manchester, Edinburgh and Leeds.”

Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecote concept, which was launched by Paul Gineste de Saurs in Paris in 1959, currently has restaurants in Paris and Barcelona and plans to open further branches in Bahrain and New York in 2009.

De Saurs’s daughter, Hélène Godillot, now owns the original restaurant and operates the licence for the international outlets.
