Next move… for a student keen to work

Friday 03 February 2006 00:00

I'm halfway through a degree in hotel and restaurant management and really miss the buzz of customer interaction. Apart from a placement year, I have another three years of theory to look forward to and it's not something I relish. Is there any other way to get on in the industry?

The Answer
Your enthusiasm is music to any employer's ears, but don't give up your degree lightly. You can achieve excellent industry experience as you study.

For employers, a degree student in the team is a great asset. You offer much-needed support through the busy times, while gaining experience.

Identify the sector of the industry you have enjoyed working in or are keen to go into after your degree - hotel, contract catering or restaurant - and then apply to companies in these areas. They will be keen to have you now in a part-time role, but will also look at the bigger picture and want you to join full-time when you qualify.

Also, consider talking to a good agency with an insight into a wide variety of employers.

When looking for a part-time role, be clear whether your aim is to complement your future career or to have a casual job to keep your hand in. Discuss your needs with potential employers - they will take this into account and place you accordingly.
