Le Gavroche - 11th August

Booking form

Very few restaurants can legitimately claim to be part of culinary history and yet still be at the top of the tree. London's Le Gavroche, however, is one of them. The holder of two Michelin stars and four AA rosettes, it was established by Albert Roux and his younger brother, Michel, in 1967, and can with some justice claim, along with Michel's Waterside Inn at Bray, to have kick-started the present-day revolution in British kitchens. Gordon Ramsay is just one of the high-profile chefs to have trained here.

Now under the chef-proprietorship of Albert's son, Michel Roux Jr, it remains unashamedly and luxuriously classic in cuisine and service. As the 2003 AA Restaurant Guide puts it: "This place remains unique and we ought to be grateful for that."

On Monday 11 August, there's a chance for 80 lucky Caterer & Hotelkeeper readers to sample that uniqueness for themselves when Michel Jr hosts the third Chef Eats Out lunch of 2003, held by the magazine in association with British Meat Foodservice.

Starting at 12.30pm with a Champagne and canapé reception, the event will also include a tour of Le Gavroche's kitchens. The menu will centre around a main dish of Berkshire pork and comprises king prawns "mango salsa"; asparagus salad and Spanish pata negra ham, Parmesan and truffle vinaigrette; pan-fried spiced scallops; red mullet fillet with a fennel fondue; pork medallion with a faggot and a trotter stew with morels; braised lettuce, pot-roasted potatoes, and a puff-pastry tartlet of seasonal berries and mascarpone sorbet.

Coffee and petits fours will complete the meal, during which Michel Jr will be around to chat to guests. Wine expert Roy Richards of Richards Walford & Co will also be on hand to talk guests through the wine selection - Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs NV; Gruner Veltliner "Smaragd" 1999, Nicolaihof; Château la Croix des Moines 1999, Lalande de Pomerol; and Chƒteau Rabaud Promis Premier Cru 1996, Sauternes.

This event is bound to be popular, so if you would like to reserve a place for Chef Eats Out at Le Gavroche, please send a cheque, made payable to Le Gavroche, for £45 per person, attached to the completed form on this page.

The sponsor

Chef Eats Out provides a unique opportunity to experience at first hand the commitment to quality, the quest for innovation and the passion to achieve the highest possible standards that are the hallmark of outstanding restaurants and chefs. It is therefore appropriate that Le Gavroche should be the venue for the next event.

British Meat Foodservice is delighted to continue its association with Chef Eats Out. It is also especially encouraging that chefs such as Michel Roux Jr, who strive for excellence, demonstrate their continued confidence in the quality of British beef, pork and lamb. The event also shows how all three species can be successfully incorporated into the menus of some of the best restaurants in the UK.

British Meat Foodservice carries out a considerable amount of work with chefs in the food service industry, and sponsoring the Chef Eats Out event is an extension of that commitment.
