Travelodge to spend £52m building three hotels in Spain

Budget hotel chain Travelodge has announced plans to spend €61m (£52m) building three new hotels in Spain.

The hotels in Barcelona, Seville and Valencia will all be newly constructed, through a joint venture with property developer Citygrove, which has developed a number of Travelodge hotels in the UK.

The 240-room Barcelona hotel is situated in the former Olympics athletes’ village; the 199-room Seville hotel is located next to the El Prado Metro Station; while the 110-bedroom Valencia hotel will be located next to city’s airport. All three will open in 2011.

Paul Harvey, managing director for international development at Travelodge, said each of the hotels was “ideally situated to meet the demands of both Spanish domestic holidaymakers and the business community”.

“The recent downturn in Spain has meant that locations are presenting themselves to us at prices which are far more realistic when compared to the recent boom years,” he said.

“This has enabled us to build up a strong pipeline of properties across the country and I expect to be making further expansion announcements soon.”

Travelodge already operates three hotels in Spain with two in Madrid and one in Barcelona and plans to reach 100 hotels in Spain by 2020 in a €1b expansion programme.

  • Stories resurfaced yesterday that Whitbread-owned Premier Inn and Travelodge were once again considering merging, although neither company would comment.

Preliminary discussions last year ended in acrimony when Whitbread claimed Travelodge had demanded too high a price.

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
