Tommi's Burger Joint to come to London

Icelandic burger chain Tommi's Burger Joint is set to come to London, with the opening of a restaurant in Marylebone this month.

Owned by entrepreneur Tomas Tómasson, who operates six Tommi's Burger Joint outlets in Iceland, the American-style diner will house 25 covers, offering a selection of burgers including beef and vegetarian.

Tómasson will be at the helm of the new venture for the first few months, together with head chef Siggi Gunnlaugsson, one of the group's most senior chefs, who has relocated to the UK with his family.

All burgers will be cooked on an American gas grill and selection of alternative American classics will also be available, including rib eye steak and chicken in honey sauce. Fries, Béarnaise and cocktail sauces plus a selection of interesting soft drinks, complete the offering.

Interiors will have an informal, vintage feel, with exposed brickwork and high wooden tables and stools made of reclaimed wood. American memorabilia, movie posters and shots of pop culture icons will be on the walls.

Tómasson said: "We are hugely excited about bringing our burgers to London as the capital has a huge appetite for them right now. Having eaten one every day for the last eight years and travelling the world trying out different styles, I know that a good burger joint should be fun, relaxed and most importantly taste great, so we hope Londoners enjoy our take on the burger phenomenon."

Tómasson opened his first burger restaurant, Tommi's Hamburgers, in 1981 and grew the group to six sites before selling his interest in 1984. He consequently launched Iceland's first Hard Rock Cafe in Reykjavik in 1987, and bought and renovated the Hótel Borg in 1992, which he ran for 10 years.

The first Tommi's Burger Joint opened in April 2004 in Reykjavik, followed by four more in the Icelandic capital and one in Hafnarfirði.
