National homeless charity Crisis is looking for trained chefs and catering staff to help feed homeless people this Christmas.

The charity is holding its 35th annual Crisis Open Christmas event, which provides up to 1,500 homeless people with a range of services including housing and benefits advice, full health checks and catering during the festive season.

Crisis anticipates it will serve some 33,000 meals during its Open Christmas campaign, which runs from 23-30 December, and is looking for volunteers to take on a range of voluntary shifts during the week.

Mark Wollard, Crisis food service organiser, said: “We are looking for chefs with experience of working in the industry and kitchen hands with a food hygiene certificate. Things can get quite hectic and the ability to work under pressure can be a real bonus when you are serving between 800 and 1,000 meals in one sitting.”

• StreetSmart is running its ninth annual campaign to help homeless people by asking diners at participating restaurants across the UK to add £1 to their bill when eating out in November and December. In London 300 eateries, including Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants, Alan Yau’s Hakkasan and Giorgio Locatelli’s Locanda Locatelli, have signed up to the project and StreetSmart hopes to raise close to £500,000 in total across the UK.
