The Nobody Inn

Award winning West Country pub Nobody Inn has been sold for £1.6m after 38 years in the same family.

A Good Pub Guide Pub of the Year and Good Hotel Guide Inn of the Year winner, the freehouse with rooms is located in Doddiscombsleigh, near Exeter in East Devon.

Purchased by Jennie and Philip Bolton in 1970, it has continued under son Nick Borst-Smith and wife Lesley and is known for its wines, whiskies and cheeses.

The inn has been taken over by Andy and Rowena Whiteman who have themselves picked up a number of trade awards since taking over the Harris Arms pub in Portgate near Okehampton, Devon. The sale was handled by property agents Christie & Co.

The Whitemans, who trained as wine makers in New Zealand, plan to refurbish the inn’s kitchens and bring in some of their brigade from the Harris but do not plan any major changes.

Dating back to the 16th century, the building became an inn in 1838 and was named the Nobody Inn in 1952 after unfortunate episode with a deceased landlord.

The Borst-Smiths will continue to run a bed & breakfast at Town Barton nearby the inn as well as a mail order wine business.
