Luxury hotel operator Von Essen has been forced to postpone the opening of its new-build hotel in Battersea, Caterersearch can reveal.

The venture, which marks the company’s first move into London, was set to open in June 2009, but has now been pushed back to September.

Andrew Onraet, architect and designer for the luxury hotel, which is to be named Verta, said the group had been forced to postpone the opening due to heavy rain at the excavation start of the project.

He said: “We’re now looking at a mid-September launch due to delays on the building side. There was always a delay from the knock–on effect of the rain which meant we spent 2-3 months longer on the ground.”

The hotel is located on the Thames waterfront in an undeveloped area of Battersea. Von Essen hopes to revive the area in the same vein as the Southbank redevelopment east along the river.

Von Essen is also this year hosting Caterer’s long running Acorns, which recognises the 30 future stars of hospitality under the age of 30, visit our Acorns mini-site for more and to enter.
