Philip Riddle steps down as chief executive at VisitScotland

Philip Riddle has stepped down as VisitScotland chief executive while discussions over his future in the post take place.

The move comes after reports over last weekend suggested that Riddle was at the centre of a boardroom power battle and faced being forced out.

The Scottish Herald reported that Riddle, who has been the chief executive of the quango since 2001, was ousted by chairman Mike Cantlay following a secret board meeting on 14 May. The paper said that Cantlay, who was installed as chairman by the SNP Government, drove the change at the top.

In a statement issued yesterday, VisitScotland said: "VisitScotland can confirm that discussions are progressing in private with chief executive Philip Riddle concerning his position at VisitScotland.

"To give Mr Riddle space to conduct these discussions in the light of unhelpful media speculation at the weekend, he will not undertake CEO duties in the meantime.

"As a result of governance obligations, an interim arrangement is in place where current Director of Visitor Engagement Malcolm Roughead is acting chief executive officer.

"VisitScotland will be saying no more until the matter is resolved."
