Gareth Cartledge wins Care Cook of the Year 2008

Gareth Cartledge from St Monica’s Trust in Bristol has been revealed as the National Association of Care Catering’s (NACC) Care Cook of the Year 2008.

He beat six finalists to the title at a cook off held last month in Birmingham with a menu of smoked haddock kedgeree with vegetable risotto with a poached egg and mild curry sauce, followed by cabinet pudding with crème anglasis.

The contest, supported by the Worshipful Company of Cooks, challenges contestants to create a tasty two course meal at a cost of under £1.25 per person that meets NACC nutritional criteria.

Sue Ullmann, national chairman of the NACC, said: “As the Government puts its Improving Nutritional Care Action Plan into place these six finalists are an example of the quality of staff employed day in day out across Britain.”

Cartledge said: “I am thrilled to have won the title of Care Cook of the Year, and have been able to show the skill I use in my workplace to a wider audience.”

Last year the Government published its first ever nutrition action plan aimed at tackling malnutrition amongst care home residents.

The move came after a sustained campaign by the likes of the Liberal Democrats, charities and NACC to get the issue of malnutrition in care homes addressed.
