Steve Bacon receives award from chef Gary Rhodes

Vocational training provider City & Guilds has awarded one of its top accolades to a chef and full-time teacher from Guernsey.

Guernsey chef Steve Bacon, 50, has become the City & Guilds Innovator of the Year in recognition of his enthusiastic teaching of catering at Guernsey College of Further Education.

A teacher for more than 22 years, Bacon was described as a well known face on the island that had driven through initiatives to promote catering, good food and hygiene.

Bacon has also lobbied effectively for extra funding, as well redesigning some of the courses offered to students at the college to make them as relevant as possible to them.

“Catering is a career; it’s a skilled career, it’s not just for anybody who can’t achieve a GCSE,” said Bacon.
