The Government has said it plans to limit the number of new “super casinos” to eight.
The idea of large regional casinos, part of the Government’s gambling bill, has drawn fierce criticism from some quarters, with campaigners fearing they will encourage gambling addiction.
But it has also attracted large US firms such as MGM Mirage, which have said they will invest in huge casino complexes, which would include luxury hotels and restaurants.
UK-based companies including Hilton and Stanley Leisure have also said they would like to build such casinos.
Hilton is planning one in Blackpool and Stanley Leisure one in Leeds next to Leeds United Elland Road football stadium.
Tourism minister Richard Caborn today told the House of Commons gambling bill standing committee, which is examining the proposed legislation, that the Government would be restricting the number of "super casinos" to eight, although this could rise later depending on how people reacted.
Prime Minister Tony Blair had in the past indicated there might be as many as 20 to 40 of the venues but Hilton, for one, argued that between four and five might be more appropriate.
