The question
I am 24 and have been an assistant manager at a pub-restaurant since I was 21. I enjoy the responsibility of my position but have become disillusioned about pay and career progression. I've spoken to my area manager but have received no feedback. Please help.

Communication - or lack of it - is the number one reason people are dissatisfied at work; it's a shame your area manager hasn't come back to you.

This industry has great opportunities and it sounds as though you may need to be looking further afield. Chase up your area manager first and, if you still have no luck, cast your net and see what's out there. Check out the possibilities on www.caterer-online.com or enlist the help of a good recruitment consultancy, which should be able to give you all the advice you need to have a full picture of the possibilities.
Jane Sunley, managing director, Learnpurple

What an interesting question. I am assuming that, although you mention you commenced on a part-time basis, you have become full-time. I also wonder at this stage how clear you were with your employer as to your intentions and commitment. Finally, you don't say if you are with a chain or an independent pub-restaurant.

The bottom line is that, if you have decided to pursue a career in this industry and want career progression, you need to ensure you have an employer with a clear and structured management development programme.

I would urge you to reapproach your area manager and ensure that he is really clear on your aspirations. If they can be met, so much the better; if not, you need to do some quality research and choose a company that has the appropriate development opportunities for you.
Lesley Reynolds, chief executive, Portfolio International
