Compass Group has won new deals in the healthcare and education sectors worth more than £17m in total turnover.

Compass’s Medirest was picked up a five-year deal worth £17m in totality to supply patient meals at Southampton’s teaching hospitals.

It is the first time that Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, which has three sites in the city, has outsourced its catering offer.

As part of the deal, Medirest will be introducing its ‘Steamplicity’ cooking system, which it claims will not only supply patients with freshly steam cooked meals but reduce food wastage and reduce power consumption by up to 50%.

Steve Cenci, business director of Medirest, said: “Southampton is one of the largest acute trusts in England and securing the patient feeding contract and extensions to our cleaning and retail contracts is a significant achievement for our team.”

And following the caterer’s £5.4m school meals contract for Kent, which was announced last week, its education business Chartwells has added Llandovery College in Carmarthenshire to its list of clients.

Chartwells has signed a £360,000 turnover deal with the Welsh co-educational boarding and day school to provide catering for boarders, staff and day pupils, seven days a week.

The caterer will also provide silver service hospitality and fine dining for events, such as weddings and conferences, at the 160-year old school.
