Owner of the Michelin-starred Black Rat in Winchester plans B&B

Michelin-starred restaurateur David Nicholson, owner of the Black Rat in Winchester, plans to move into the bed and breakfast business.

Nicholson has applied for planning permission to build nine bedrooms just across the road from the Black Rat, next to another of his businesses, the Black Boy pub.

If the £600,000 plan gains planning approval, Nicholson hopes to open the B&B at the end of 2013, calling it the Black Hole.

The B&B would be next door to the Black Boy and share the use of its kitchen. The scheme involves demolishing a cluster of dilapidated Victorian buildings.

The Black Hole would complete a quartet of "Black" businesses in Winchester. As well as the Boy and Rat, Nicholson also owns the Black Bottle wine bar.

Nicholson, who took over the Black Boy pub in 1995, said: "I decided to go for a B&B because I think we are short of rooms in Winchester and I have a lot of people asking me for rooms, so I think there is a demand for it."

The Black Rat gained its Michelin star in 2011.
