Crerar hotel development in Scotland faces public scrutiny

A £10m hotel development by Scottish hotel group Crerar on the edge of St Andrews, Fife, is to come under public scrutiny at a hearing later this month.

According to The Tayside and Fife Courier, the hotel company has lodged an application with Fife council for outline planning permission for an 80-bedroom hotel.

Crear has said the new hilltop hotel would generate £10m of investment for the local economy and create 60 jobs.

But locals have lodged objections on the grounds that the application departs from the local plan for St Andrews and green belt recommendations.

Fears have also been expressed that the proposed access to the site will be from the A917, which is an accident black spot, and contribute to an increase in traffic.

Crerar, part of the Northern British Trust Group, maintains that the development would bring benefits to tourists and residents, and would include new open parkland, which would be placed in a trust.

The group owns eight hotels in Scotland - including the Craiglynne hotel near Aviemore and Edinburgh's Melville Castle hotel - along with the Chevin hotel and spa in Yorkshire.
