Beer drinkers in Britain face a £5 pint in time for the London Olympics in 2012 according to consumer body the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).

The real ale group revealed research today that claims the average price of a pint of real ale has risen by 12p since the budget in March, with lager up by an average of 14p per pint.

If price inflation of approximately 5% per annum continues until the Olympic Games in 2012, London could be serving visitors real ale at an average of £4.14 per pint, while lager will cost on average £4.48.

Camra’s figures are based on an average taken from a survey of 242 pubs from in February and June of this year.

Camra chief executive Mike Benner said: “High beer taxes threaten to prevent many low and moderate earners enjoying a regular pint at their local pub.

“We desperately urge the chancellor to think again before he goes down in history as the chancellor who closed thousands of community pubs; damaged community life and prevented many millions of pub-goers from enjoying a regular trip to the pub.”

In March the chancellor announced inflation busting price hikes for alcohol and put booze on a 2% above inflation price escalator for the next four years.
