The owners of one of South Africa’s best known wine estates are set to launch a restaurant in London this year, Caterersearch can reveal.

Gary and Kathy Jordan, owners of Jordan Wines in Stellenbosch, together with business partner Neleen Strauss, one of the founding partners of London restaurants Vivat Bacchus, are set to open High Timber in March.

The 70-seat City restaurant will be located 50 yards from Millennium Bridge, overlooking Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and Tate Modern, offering seating on the bank of the Thames.

Spread over two floors, it will include a main dining room with separate cheese room on the ground floor as well as two wine cellars and a 12-seat private dining room in the basement.

The menu will be modern European with an emphasis on meats from all over the world including a range of South African and European meats as well as Kobe beef from Japan. Head chef will be Justin Saunders, who currently works at The Duke’s Hotel in Mayfair, with prices starting from £15 for two courses.

High Timber will feature around 40,000 bottles of wine in its cellars including international vintages with a focus on South African and French wines, which will be served by the bottle and the glass.

Strauss described the restaurant’s concept as “wine dining”.  “The menu will offer something for everyone and while we will offer fine dining, there will be staples such as bangers and mash and fish and chips on the menu too,” she told Caterersearch.

“Most of the wine will be served by the glass but we’re not going to go down the carafe route. We’re there to cater for everyone, no matter what their budget.”
