The New Inn pub in St Owen’s Cross in Hereford has become the first hospitality business to be accredited with Catered4thekids status.

The Catered4thekids mark assesses pub and restaurant food against 12 standards and has been set up to allow parents to find venues serving healthy children’s food.

Stipulations of the mark include the fact that burgers must be homemade with a minimum of 80% meat and that only 20% of main meals can be deep fried, with a healthy drinks range offered.

Carl May, co-founder of Catered4thekids, said: “We have established a much needed benchmark that will give families the opportunity to locate places to eat that they can be sure offer great quality family dining.

“As parents we appreciate the time that you have to go out is precious and should not be wasted eating the same processed meals”.

Nigel Maud, landlord and director of the New Inn, said he would like to see more businesses pushing better food to children and educating them about what they eat.

“We were delighted to be assessed and awarded the Catered4thekids award, especially as we were the first to go through the process. This was part of out ongoing look at food for kids in trying to educate them and ensure that we got rid of the notorious fatty foods that are rubbish such as chicken nuggets.”
