McDonald's in the UK will start selling fruit as part of its Happy Meals for children from April, it announced last week.
The UK is the first market in which the burger giant is trying the fruit, as it tries to shake off its junk-food image and restore profits. In 2002 it reported its first loss in 47 years as a listed company.
The 80g bags of fruit, which include apple slices and grapes, can be substituted for the portion of chips in Happy Meal boxes or bought separately for 59p.
McDonald's is also making other efforts to introduce healthier food, including a pasta and chicken salad, with other salads to follow later in the year.
n McDonald's was criticised this week by advertising watchdog the Independent Television Commission (ITC), which said the Steak Premiere served in restaurants was quite unlike the one pictured in the chain's television advertisements.
McDonald's said it was disappointed by the ITC's decision that the advert must not be shown again unless it is altered.
