Avian flu destabilises poultry sales

The poultry market is becoming increasingly unstable as bird flu moves closer to the UK, according to suppliers.

Confirmation that avian flu had reached flocks of geese and ducks in South-west France has led to 20 European countries - the UK apart - banning French poultry products.

France has now started vaccinating nearly one million ducks and geese in the region.

Managing director of worldwide supplier Grivan Products Jacques Boissier estimated that sales of poultry and foie gras had fallen by 25% and 20%, respectively.

But Peter Allen, managing director of meat supplier Aubrey Allen, said UK poultry prices have risen as many producers reduced their flock sizes.

In the meantime, the Food Standards Agency has advised caterers not to use raw eggs in dishes.
