Janice Gillan to chair Hospital Caterers Association

Janice Gillan has been elected chair of the Hospital Caterers Association (HCA), succeeding Kevan Wallace, who steps down after two years in office.

A member of the HCA for more than 16 years, Gillan was branch secretary from 1996 to 2008 and then chair of the HCA West of Scotland branch from 2008 to 2011. She was also national vice-chair, 2009-2011.

Gillan's career in the National Health Service began nearly 30 years ago as a trainee cook. She qualified as a Member of the HCIMA (now the Institute of Hospitality) in 1988 and is currently a senior catering manager within NHS Ayrshire & Arran, while studying for a masters in business administration at the University of West of Scotland

Commenting on her appointment as the new HCA Chair, Janice Gillan said: "Tough challenges lie ahead for all of us within health care catering and the NHS.

"We will all be considering how we can continue to maintain quality hospital food, sourced as sustainably as possible and to deliver efficient catering services within a National Health Service that is facing the biggest budget cuts since it began.

"As the incoming chair of the HCA, I will be focused on providing our members with as much support and guidance as possible so that they can continue to achieve high standards and safeguard the nutritional care of patients".
