Industry data: Number of licenced premises in the UK

There are close to 200,000 licensed premises in the UK. This total also includes off-licences (51,000) and clubs (29,000).

Full on-licence: An on-licence authorises the retail sale of intoxicating liquor for consumption on or off the premises. On-licensed outlets may be public houses, hotels or wine bars.

Restricted on-licence: A restricted on-licence may be a restaurant licence, a residential licence or a combined restaurant and residential licence.

A restaurant licence authorises the sale of intoxicating liquor to people taking meals in premises habitually used for the supply of meals.

A residential licence authorises the sale of intoxicating liquor to residents and their guests in premises habitually providing board and lodging including breakfast and at least one other main meal.
